The 2023 conference of the Society for Textual Scholarship will focus on texts as designed objects, with attention to the multiple registers of “design.”

The “Design and Text” Plenary

Silas Munro (Vermont College of Fine Arts) and Lucille Tenazas (Parsons School of Design), “On the Consideration of a Black Grid.”

Hosted by Carolyn Vega, Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature. Limited to 20 participants.

Behind the Scenes at the Morgan Library & Museum

Hosted by Dr. Jesse Erickson, Astor Curator of Printed Books and Bindings. Limited to 20 participants.


Sessions will take place on the campus of The New School, primarily at the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, 65 W 11th St, New York NY 10011.

Given the wide range of lodging options in New York City in terms of location and price, we are not arranging for rooms at a dedicated conference hotel. Conferees looking for convenient accommodations may wish to investigate the following options.


Pre-Conference Library Tours

Registration available through Friday, May 26 or until filled. Each tour is limited to 20 participants.

  • Behind the Scenes at the New York Public Library’s Berg Collection. Wednesday, May 31, 1 – 2 pm. FREE.
  • Behind the Scenes at the Morgan Library & Museum. Wednesday, May 31, 2:30 – 4 pm. Limited to 20 participants. $20.00 Morgan ticket plus $1.50 service fee = $21.50
